Shooting black and white in camera.

Recently black and white photos are back in fashion.  Several cameras makers now make a dedicated black and white only camera, in these the sensors are designed to produce  a better black and white, closer to the film look.

That said pretty much all cameras and most modern phone have a black and white option, and failing that your photo editing software can also do it.  Here I'm talking about black and white in a normal digital camera though.

So whats the advantage of doing it in camera as opposed to photoshop?  Well the honest answer is very little, in photoshop you have better control on the conversion, in camera the big advantage is you can see what it looks like in black and white and wether the shots works or not.

Top tip if you shoot black and white in camera is A set a colour filter in the black and white options (I usually use orange) and B shoot in raw.  That way you get a black and white jpeg, and see the black and white image on the cameras screen, but you also have a full colour raw to play with as well.

So heres one I took the other day, shot in black and white in camera (yes I have the colour as well) and as I mentioned I had orange filter set.
