New versions or re-makes

I'm talking about films and tv here. It seems to be popular to re-make a program or movie. Over recent years we had the Starsky and Hutch movie, a CHIPS movie, a number of others,  various tv series.
More recently we had the frankly bloody awful Ghostbusters just made to give women more staring roles, same with Oceans 8 (both box office flops).
However a worse new trend is showing it's ugly head. A remake but changed from the original book (or film) the Classic updated to modern time Shakespeare for example.
This week we had the ABC murders by the BBC, sadly they changed Hercule Poirot so much his own mother wouldn't recognize him. The problem here is they are changing parts of the story the author though was important and places a lot of emphasis on, like his accent and appearence.
My question then is at what point does a story stop being the work it's claimed to be? in this case is it fair to call it Agatha Christie ABC murders? Or the ABC murders by the BBC?
If I rewrite a Harry Potter film, but make Harry a Latvian refugee dwarf, who gets a chance to work at Hogwarts chip shop in Earls court road, and meets Hermione Granger, the barmaid of the Bell and Hammer pub and Ron a city banker. Can I really still call it Harry Potter by J. K. Rowling?  I have my doubts.
But the James Bond films do it, the last lot only have the title and Bond  in common with the books.
That said if the Beeb see this they'll no doubt have someone writing the story as we speak...

Pockets?

Pockets? Seriously, why are they so bad?
Pockets have been around for centuries, yet for some reason we still cant get them right.
I have jackets where the pocket is so badly designed you have to keep it zipped shut or everything falls out. Trousers with pockets so flimsy a small tissue will rip it to pieces.
Lets be honest we now carry more stuff than ever.
Decades ago people carried they wallet, cigarettes and matches and a house key.  Now we have mobile phone, house keys, car keys, cigarettes or those huge vaping machines, loads of change now we lost pound notes. It's heavier and things like phones are expensive. We have a phone costing a grand in a pocket that cost about 4p and is made of something rejected from a toilet roll company as too flimsy to wipe your arse with. Who though that was a good idea?  Why not use kevlar or something tough for Gods sake.
Twice I've resown a trouser pocket, twice the material is so poor it's just fallen apart again, and these weren't cheap trousers. And when I sew something it's stays sewed. (Ok it's not neat but hell it ain't coming apart)
So come on tailors, make pockets out of something decent for heavens sake.

Merry Christmas all

Not sure if I'll have time to post again before Christmas so I'll take this oppotunity to post a Snow pic and wish you all a Very Merry Christmas.
(and yes that is me in the pic, my best side in fact)

Flying to Payam? (Iran)

Thinking of flying to Payam in Iran? Not a problem... unless you happen to be unlucky enough to be on a flight like Tabans Airlines MD 88 on the 16th Nov this year.
They tried to land at Fat'h airport near bye... twice, by mistake. Fat'h airport only has a 3000 foot runway though, which is about the shortest an MD 88 can land on given idea weight and weather conditions, which this aircraft didn't have.
Luckly at some point somebody realized they were at the wrong airport and flew to the proper one. You may be unlucky and get a pilot who doesn't realize he's trying to land at the wrong airport which is too small, and one who suffers from "press on itess" as it's called. Determined to land come hell or high water.
 Enjoy your flight....

Doctor Who.

I've tried to keep out of the debate over the new Doctor Who.  Sadly I just can't stand still and watch it be killed off.
I've been a fan since the first ever episode aired on the 23rd Nov 1963 the unearthly child, followed by the arrival of the Daleks in the 5th episode on the 21st Dec 1963, after that  I was hooked.
Theres been good and bad Doctors since. I must admit my favorite was the first, dear old William Hartnell, I wasn't much taken by Peter Davison (the 5th doctor) and Paul McGann (8th) was bloody terrible, not however as bad as the dreaded Peter Crapaldi... errr Capaldi, my bad.
I found his episodes hard to watch. Not helped by scripts clearly written for a younger actor, Capaldi didn't have the acting range needed to carry it off.
Then we come to the new Doctor..... Jodie Twittaker   I mean Whittaker.  Well where do I start.
The costume is silly, she's a hopeless actress, indeed the fact she gets less airtime by having 3 assistants shows even the beeb recognize this weakness. The scripts are just plain crazy, talk about PC they just ram the beebs agenda down the viewers throats. One episode even asks if a person is robophobic for gods sake.
Now I do wonder if the beeb are trying to kill it off, they asked viewers in a survey before making this series how they felt about a woman Doctor, it overwhelming said NO! yet the beeb ignored it's fanbase and did it anyway.
Now the truth is science fiction isn't popular with TV companies, it's always expensive to make yet looks cheap, the camera crew always end up in a quarry in Wales pretending it's planet Quebble five in the Mogodon cluster, and unless done well it tends to struggle for viewers.
Doctor whos highest viewing figures are from Matt Smith (not counting Christmas specials) with nearly 12 million average, the first series pulled around 8 million, thats a lot in the 1960s when lots didn't have TV. The lowest are from Capaldi  5.45 million and Whittaker 4.8 million, compare that to a repeat episode of Dads Army 1973 shown in Dec this year pulled over 1.5 million. So only three times as many who watched an old well run repeat.
 Well done BBC.

The band

Some band shots.

Buying a tripod?

Re a question I was asked the other day. If your buying a tripod here's a few things to think about.

Weight. Do you go heavy or light?  Well both have advantages, light means your more likely to actually carry it around with you, heavy means it's probably a lot more solid. Light ones can and do blow over, even in surprisingly low winds.
Carbon fibre?  Apart from price the material it's made from makes little difference, yes it's lighter but see above.
Tripod head,   Yes the head. Not all tripods come with the bit you screw the camera on as standard. There's a huge range of heads. There's also video heads which are very different (often having a pin by the camera screw) these often don't tilt in the portrait mode (not needed for video) they also usually have a damped turning movement to make panning smoother (turning the camera to follow action) While you can use them for still photography they can be a bit of a faff about, especially if your doesn't do portrait mode, you can work around it by turning the camera sideways usually.
Before buying one extend it all the way up, centre column as well and tap the top gently, if it wobbles like a belly dancer on acid walk away or find a stronger one.
Hook. no, not the crap peter pan film, some tripods have a hook on the bottom of the centre column. This is to hang a weight to help stabilize a light tripod, a light nylon or mesh bag with a stone or something will do but dont go mental here, you have a light tripod, dont try hanging a bolder off it, also keep in mind if the wind starts the weight swinging it can make things worse.
Lastly, if you do manage to hang a 40lb rock off the bottom of your light tripod remember to take the rock home with you in your bag for next time. It'll also help remind you you should have bought a heavier tripod in the first place.....

Bloody packaging!

Seriously how hard can it be to package food?  Too hard it seems!
I bought pate the other day, nice on toast, except it must be made of plutonium or Ebola or something. They certainly don't want you getting near the bastard stuff.  Prise off the lid and then.... try to get through the sealing layer underneath. I would say plastic but it cant be, not normal plastic anyway.  It might be the stuff the Star ship Enterprise uses for shields, it would stop a photon torpedo no problems.
It might be the stuff they put on Challenger tanks to keep RPG's out, again no problem.
Ok I'm taking the piss but my God this stuff was tough, I honestly ended up with a meat cleaver.
Then the icing on the cake, the plastic lid doesn't fit once you take the sealing layer, it just falls off. So now you cant reseal it.
 Well done lads.

Flying on an Airbus A320? Some light reading for you..

Something you wont find in the in flight light reading is the problem with the engine cowling doors.  So far only 38 have had issues or come off, so nothing to worry about there.... Unless your the sort of person who wonders if the bloody engine cowlings keep falling off what else is badly designed....
 Sleep well...

Christmas..... Oh God....

Yes it's soon to be Christmas again.  You can tell it's turned December, easter eggs are in the shops and the hated Christmas FUCKING music is blasting out, has been for a while now.
I wonder why the shops haven't figured out it actually puts people off shopping rather than spend more?
Yes the joy of turkey collecting is looming in the distance, that was a shambles last year, if it doesn't go better this year I'm taking a can of petrol with me the year after, I'll teach the bastards some Christmas spirt, like to see your xmas puds burning? Watch this!
 Now wheres my bloody turkey?

Rhossili

Managed to get out with my son for a wander this week, the weather was a bit dodgy but we dodged most of the rain.
Ended up in Rhossili in Wales.
Pics edited very quickly as my son wanted some.

Shark

Found a bit of tissue paper on the floor today, shaped exactly like a shark...  I figure it's a sign from cod!
 I'll get my coat.....

Flying to Egypt?

If your flying to Egypt you might consider some light reading... to be more precise the EASA (European aviation safety agency) extended security warning for Egypt and the Sanai area.
Nothing much to worry about, unless your concerned about GPS jamming around Cairo International Airport. RNAV (GNSS) approaches should not be planned there. (so hope for daylight and good weather).
Some countries also advise not flying lower than 25000 feet to avoid the risk of manpad (man portable anti aircraft rockets) attacks.
So all well and good then....   Me I'm sticking to Brighton, Ok theres no pyramid but I suspect arriving on the number 23 bus is safer than flying to Cairo with people playing silly buggers with the GPS system.

How unlucky do you have to be.... ?

A pilot died after hitting a combine harvester in Australia. Worse it was on Jerrybang road. How unlucky do you have to be for that to happen.

I don't believe it! But sadly it's true.

Hard to believe but Morriston Hospital in South Wales has issued an official statement asking teenagers not to set fire to themselves (or each other).
Seriously? How monumentally stupid do you need to be to set yourself on fire as part of an "anti-social" media challenge.
It seems it's the "in" thing to do! Yeah right morons!
I have to say I wonder if we should say and do nothing?. After all, in a way it's nature and evolutions way of culling the thick twats and stopping them breeding, and lowering the gene pool further.
Bring a whole new meaning to fuel economy.   What do you get to the gallon?  about 4 Welsh teenagers.....

Halloween at Bleanavon steam railway

Halloween or All Hallows eve, is thought to have originated as Celtic/Gaelic festival of Samhain (harvest festival essentially) and has Pagan roots.
Anyway back to the pictures. We went to the Blaenavon steam railway halloween night.
lots of pics, all shot without flash but high iso or a little bit of video light when needed.

RAC cover... Don't have an accident!!

It seems RAC cover is fine if you break down. On the other hand if you have an accident you are probably not going to get ANY help from them.
Keep that in mind when your looking for roadside cover.
Recently, They left a dissabled woman alone in London at night because she had a tyre damaged in a minor accident.

Ford electrics.... part two, the saga continues

I mentioned before Fords famed electrical "issues" and the problems with changing a simple headlight bulb or a battery.
Well in part two we're going to discuss the rear lights. Oh to be fair you don't have to take both rear wheels off to change the side light bulb at the back, amazingly they made an opening you can just about get your hand in to get at the bulbs.
No this time they were clever. They lulled me into a false sense of security!
You see the bulb in the handbook is different to the bulb actually fitted in the light, not that it mattress, I asked in the shop and the bloke went tappy-tap-tap on the computer and gave me the right bulb.... well not exactly, it looks like the right bulb... but the contacts and bayonet pins are ever so slightly different, not enough to be obvious, just enough so the fucker wont fit.
Three bloody time I went back and fro, in the end I took the original bulb in and they matched it. "Thats the wrong bulb" the bloke in the shop tells me, "I've got the same car, same year,  it wont fit" he added.  It did though.
Bloody Fords!

Newcastle Emlyn flooding.

Was in Newcastle Emlyn the other week during the flooding, heres a few pics.
