Light planes engine failure on the increase.

Looking through some recent general aviation (light planes) accident reports it seems engine failures are getting more common.  While this was a fairly common type of incident anyway the apparent rise in numbers shows a worrying trend to those who fly.

The recession may be at fault.  When money is tight luxury items get left behind.  Keeping a light plane is expensive, and if your skint corners get cut.  Maybe you'll use your local mechanic, instead of a proper aircraft mechanic.  You might put off that expensive service.

You'll probably fly less due to fuel costs, that might mean the plane sitting unused for a while. Damp gets in.  None of these is a good idea if you value your life.  While lots of engine outs just lead to forced landings, sometimes these dont end well.  Come down in trees and it's probably going to hurt, and not just your aircraft.

Still theres one advantge of rising fuel costs, your less likely to crash with a full tank.  All too often planes burn after crashing, being trapped inside a burning one isn't my idea of a good way to die.  So do yourself a favor, get that aircraft a good service.
