Macro shots with a standard zoom lens

Having a proper macro lens is great, it means as well as great flower shots you can get shots like the spider and bees that have been posted recently.
Thats all well and good if you like these sortt of shots, but it's hard for a lot of people to justify the cost of a say 50mm or 105mm macro lens for the odd occasions they might want a close up shot.
There is another options. As well as close up filters or extension tubes you can now get some standard zoom lens that focus really close... and I mean close.
In the past it was usually the telephoto lens that had the word macro bunged on the side because it focused to 6 foot with meant a half decent close-ish shot.
Sigma make a 17-70mm 2.8 lens that focuses close, stupid close. I can damm near have the subject touching the front element of the lens.
With this lens the shots shown here are easy, you coud even get a bit closer, the flower is probably less than an inch across, I had to move back out a bit to get it all in. These are full uncropped images, I've not gone closer in photoshop, this is how they came off camera (with exposure ajustments on one or two) plenty close enough for a decent bee type shot or bits of flower, and you've got a decent zoom lens the rest of time.
Sorry no bees or bugs but I haven't had chance to use this lens in anger if you know what I mean.
