Aviation news

Been an odd week aviation wise.

An Polar Airlines Antonov AN24RV with 34 passengers managed to land on a frozen river to the right of the runway at  Zyryanka Airport.  Luckly there were no injuries.

And at Tokyo Narita airport an Ethiopian Airlines Boeing Dreamliner turned left instead of right when entering a taxiway.  It met another Dreamliner coming the other way head-on.  Both aircraft stopped without incident but it mean a fair delay for both aircraft while it was towed back to clear the Jetstar aircraft who was going the right way along the taxiway.

I can forgive many things but a pilot getting left and right wrong worries me.......

Twinkle twinkle

Yes it's more bloody Christmas decorations.  Again I've just not had time to get out shooting, and the weathers so bad it's really not helping.

Evening light, and Christmas decorations

O A few recent shots from this week.  I'm not getting out much shooting with dentist and Christmas mucking about, and the BLOODY AWFUL weather.  Anyway a few shots.

The tree is from one of the few dry evenings we had, the Christmas decorations were taken for a competition (fun) so there might be more in a few days.

Oh nearly forgot.  The decorations shot on a Canon 6d2 and a Yongnuo 50mm lens, the evening light tree a Canon 7d with a 35mm Canon prime

Fire safety

This may seem a strange topic for a blog but there is a reason.  House fires are up by 20% this year (I'm told)

The reasons for the rise are unclear, but it's thought Christmas lights and the huge number of rechargable batteries now being used are probably factors, with everything from toys, torches to vapes being battery the numbers have shot up in the last year or so.

For those who dont know, rechargable lithium batterys can pack a massive amount of power, a single high power torch battery can put out 20amps, enough to start some cars.  This power also has a fire risk.  Short one out or worse puncture it and you can get a blow lamp effect, easily enough to start a fire.

If your recharging these batteries it's best to keep an eye on them, even better put them in a biscuit tin or oven tray away from anything likely to catch fire easily while charging.  That way if they do burst into flame your house might have a chance.

Another possible factor is candles, popular especially this time of year, they can also be a risk, again never leave untended.

This time of year with energy prices going up by the day, gas is expensive, but please, pretty please dont try fiddling the gas meter.  Gas explosions are not funny.  I've seen two two story houses taken down the ground floor windows by a gas explosion.  It blew out all the windows in my street and blew me out of bed.  It was much worse for the flur people who were killed.

Finally consider a fire extinguisher, these are not expensive and last for years, oh yes and dont take the batteries out of your smoke alarms for the kids toys.  Crispy crittering your family to have Thomas the tank engine running for a few hours is a bad thing.

Night tree

This is another low light image.  It's pitch dark when I took this, theres a tiny bit of light from a distant house security light. Shot on my phone at F 1.8 (wide open) and I think 1/4 sec shutter speed.

Light trails hand held

Ok the question is can you do light trails without a tripod...  and the answer is yessss-ish.  Taking pics for a fun competition yesterday  (a challenge more than a comp) on the way home in freezing conditions I decided to see if I could get away with hand holding a light trails shot.

My normal go-to for light trails is ISO 200, 30 seconds, and around F 11.  Well that failed, I just couldnt keep it anything like steady enough for that long.  Second go 10 seconds and aperture ajusted to suit and out of three shots I got this one.  Is it totally movement free, hell no!  is it good enough for the blog?  I think so.

Out of three shots ,one passable isn't a bad hit rate hand holding ten seconds, especially for an old git like me.   Canon 7d, Canon 35mm prime lens

Christmas shopping....

Regular readers will know I'm not the happiest Christmas shopper in the world, some of my family and fried think I enjoy shopping, well bad news.  I dont!

This year my Christmas shopping not going well.  I tried to buy a new computer, that didnt go well, and I had to chase  big name company for my money back when they sold me a computer they didnt have and couldnt get.  After a refund, I bought one from a rival company... who also didnt have the iteam they show as IN STOCK.

Note to companies.  Dont sell stuff you dont have TWATS!  Not only do the customers have to piss about chasing you for their MONEY.  But the chances of them ever buying from you again, is nil.  To be fair to company two they did at least have a contact number and more important.  Helpful staff who sorted it out properly.  Unlike the wasters, crooks and cowboys of "cough currys cough" Never again there.

Then theres the rest of my Christmas shopping.... well I havent done any!  Yes it's less than 2 weeks and I've got one bloody present, not even bought a card.

I went into my local city yesterday for the dentist and had a look around, my God the place has gone downhill.  half of it's boarded up.  Hell it looked better after the blitz, more was probably open too.

I have no idea what to get my brother, my two nephews are probably going to get posh smellies (my fall back when I'm out of ideas) I've got one or two ideas for the reat but time is running out to order anything.

Mcdonalds

Mcdonalds is in the news for having one of it's security guards apparently soaking a homeless mans sleeping bag.  It appears the homeless man was outside the Mcdonalds, and in an atempt to get him to leave the security guard "washed" down the outside where his sleeping bag was.

Now while I can see why they would want a homeless man shifted from the property, soaking his sleeping bag in freezing cold weather might not be the right way to do it.  The story says the guard was sacked from his or her job, and rightly so if you ask me.

This raises a few points.  First is it the guards normal job to wash the outside of the store?  Because it seems to me that if they aare outside they are not providing cover to the customers inside.  Secondly and perhaps more important.  How bad has the country become to need a security guard at a fast food joint.  Seriously?

Back in my younger days "chipies" never needed a security guard.  maybe men were men back then, or maybe, just maybe Britian was still great.  And we had law and order.  Police actually on the beat, and courts that sent people to shock horror... PRISON for crimes.  Not the nonsense we have now with murderers getting 2 years jail.

Alaska monsters tv series

Oh dear God.  I watch some rubbish but this reaches a new low point.

The episode I tried to watch was the so-called "Midnight sons" looking for bigfoot.  Looking for bigfoot?  Really!  This lot would struggle to find their own faces, never mind bigfoot.

The show seems to be a copy of the bloody awful Mountain monsters.  A bunch of "mountain men" go looking for various monsters.  By looking for an elusive creature they go crashing through the woods shouting to each other.  High IQ not inculded here.

The show is so obviously fake and silly it makes the terrible acting even more of a laugh.  They have the world worse night vision cameras.  You can buy very good gear for under a grand now, so no excuse other than it's done to hide things you'd see otherwise.

Honestly why TV companies make shit like this is dont know, even the reviews take the piss out of it

Drone mail delivery??? Maybe not

A company in the UK is trying mail deliveries by drone.  Skyport drone services has been making plans to deliver mail in the Orkney islands area.  The idea is to reduce the delivery time from one day to one hour (my mail usually takes a week so I dont know why the Orkney islands need such a fast service)

Anyway the idea has been suspended after the drone sank in the sea between Hoy and Graemsay.  The report suggests this was a test and no mail was involved.

Frankly I'm a bit baffled by the whole idea.  Theres a daily ferry for a start, thats worked fine for decades, except in very bad weather, which isnt uncommon in the north of Scotland.  Bearing in mind drones cant fly in even mildly bad weather and saves less than a day the cost and risk seems pointless.

This has all the hallmarks of a vanity project  "ohh look, we can deliver mail by drone"  Wow we are so clever..  Yes looks impressive while your fishing for your drone in the sea.....

Luminate margam park 2023 (part1)

Went to Luminate Margam park a few days ago and wasnt impressed.  I'd gone a few years ago and frankly it was miles better then.  This year looked like a cut down cheapy do.  Plus INMO it's actually a bit dangerous.

Let me explain.  First off they had me drive over quite rough ground to park as they were packing the cars in (my cars low slung), I was worried about damaging the underside off roading.  Then after you go in it's well...  underwhelming frankly.  Now while some parts are fairly well lit, large areas and not, and coupled with rough unveven ground it's an accident waiting to happen.

Theres no reason all the paths couldnt be lit by fairy  lights other that cost.  One area with very rought ground was only lit by a dim red light, another area was unlit and for some reason had a smoke machine squirting smoke over the path as well.  That baffled me, with lights the smoke would have been great, without lights it made it bloody dodgy in almost total darkness to see where you were stepping.

The consession stalls were fairly expensive, £4.95 for a cardboard cup of mulled wine, and indeed I got the feeling the whole thing was just designed to rip off visitors.

The last dodgy bit was on the way out.  In their wisdom the park had made a roped off path into the park from the car park, great idea!  Sadly they hadn't bothered for those leaving, so you have to walk on the road, nobody was bright enough to put a few cones out to make that safer.  All you got was a security guard shouting at people for walking on the road.  The only other option was unlit very uneven grass.  Good luck with getting sued Margam part.

Frankly for over £20 I'd expected not only a better display, but a lot more organisation, this isn't their first time, they should have figured out all the issues by now.

I wont be going again, not worth the money and I dont fancy a broken ankle.

The first batch of pis, many of these will look brighter that it actually is. All hand held, Canon 6d2.
